With experience in environmental remediation, careful planning in sensitive environments, and strong erosion and sediment control practices, Whitestone Contracting Ltd were able to deliver the St Bathans Landfill Remediation collaboratively with the client and stakeholders, while demonstrating proven capability in remote rural locations.
Delivered for Central Otago District Council
Project Status Complete
What We Delivered
- Vegetation clearance and site preparation, with mulched materials retained onsite.
- Completed planting of native vegetation consistent with surrounding Department of Conservation (DOC) land in the Springtime to revegetate the site. This assists with stabilising the capped landfill, reduce erosion risk, and provides long term ecological rehabilitation.
- Installation of a landfill capping system, including blinding layers, geosynthetic clay layer (GCL), duragrid, followed by backfilling and compaction using site-won material and imported material.
- Survey and earthworks to regrade the existing 35-50° landfill slope to a 25° slop as per the design.
Why It Matters
Historic landfill sites can pose long-term environmental risks if left unmanaged. By remediating the St Bathans site, WCL has helped reduce the potential for erosion, sediment runoff and contamination entering nearby waterways, while improving the long-term stability of the land.Â
The project supports environmental protection in a rural community and reflects a practical approach to managing legacy infrastructure. For WCL, it demonstrates our capability in environmental remediation and our commitment to delivering responsible, well-planned civil solutions that balance engineering requirements with environmental outcomes.
Strengths We Brought to the Project
Proven environmental remediation delivery, careful planning in sensitive locations, effective erosion and sediment controls, collaborative work with council and stakeholders, capability in remote Central Otago environments.
